And that's just Russia. People used to use "Russia" to refer (inaccurately) not just to Russia, but also to Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania and the other "Soviet socialist republics" that comprised the former USSR. Recall the story about Fischer saying he had scored 3.5/4 against the "Russians," Keres responding that none of them were Russians, but rather an Estonian, a Latvian, an Armenian . . . and Fischer replying, "You're all Russians to me!"
